Health Promotions

Would you like to learn more about how to make better decisions regarding your health? Do you need a video on Sexually Transmitted Diseases for your classroom presentation? Would you like to read a brochure on how to Eat Well with No Time and Money? The staff here at Student Health Services would like to help students make healthier choices in their lives by offering a wide range of health education and prevention services. Below are educational resources and services that are conveniently available, informational, and free of charge. Stop by the Student Health Center and make use of them!

Health Education Resource Room

Student Health Services now offers you even more access to learn about your health. Our new Health Education Resource Room, located next to the Health Promotion Department, offers variety of health education materials. We have videos on various health topics, health books, journals, newsletters, brochures, pamphlets, and community resource guides for your use or check-out.

A computer workstation is available to assist students in researching various health topics. Interactive CD-ROM health programs are available as well. There is a printer for your convenience. Stop by and check us out!

Health Literature

Health literature is easily accessible and conveniently located in the lobby free of charge to students as well as the Health Education Resource Room. Pamphlets are arranged by topics such as Women's Health, Drugs and Alcohol, and Abstinence/Sexual Health. Click the link for a list of the pamphlets available.

Condoms

A limited supply of condoms is also available from the Health Educator. Please be considerate of other students and take only a conservative number of condoms. Be sure to stop by Health Promotions to pick one up!

Video Library

We have an extensive collection of videos available for students to check out. Topics include: Drugs and Alcohol, Tobacco Use and Cessation, Contraception, Women's Health, Fitness, and HIV/AIDS Education, Testing, and Treatment. Students may check out a maximum of two videos at a time for a 5-day loan period. All that is required is a show of your Student I.D. and an agreement to use the video appropriately and respectfully. To check one out, stop by Student Health Services Health Education Resource Room.

HIV Testing

Free and Anonymous HIV testing is available at Student Health Services. The clinic is held on Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Wednesdays, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on a walk-in, first come, first served basis only. Please report directly to the Health Promotions area of Student Health Services where you will receive a number (for order of arrival purposes only).

Testing is also available at the Contra Costa Campus (Concord) during normal clinic hours. Call for an appointment or drop in during clinic hours).

Results are ready in two weeks and will only be given to the individual in person (no phone calls). Often waiting for two weeks may become stressful and you may need to talk to someone. Counselors from the Counseling and Psychological Services are readily available to assist any students who want someone to talk to. Students may contact them at (510) 885-3690.

OraSure Photo

Testing is performed using the OraSure Method, a highly accurate (99.97%) and reliable method without blood or needles. Using a swab, the test draws out HIV antibodies (not the virus) from the tissues of the cheek and gum for 2 minutes. It does not collect saliva, but rather a sample called oral mucosal transudate (Omt). This method is popular as it protects the patient and provider from a needle-stick injury and lessens the fear of HIV testing for those who dislike needles. For more information, call Jennifer Miranda at (510) 885-2356.

Community Resources

We at Student Health Services understand that students lead busy lives, trying to balance study load, work, and family affairs. Sometimes students find it more comfortable or convenient to seek medical assistance off-campus. Therefore, we have referral information for services available throughout Alameda County and the greater Bay Area. Services that are available include Immunizations, Dental Services, HIV Testing, Mammograms, and Public Health Clinics, just to name a few. Don't forget to look at our Health Links, which also provide valuable information via the Internet.

Workshops

Workshops are made available to the campus community on a variety of health issues. Workshops are usually held during special theme weeks or theme months. Students or faculty can also request workshops for their class, student organizations, or campus housing groups. They can be tailored according to specific populations and desired topics, and can be delivered by a Health Educator, Registered Nurse, or Physician. Refer to our Calendar for upcoming workshops or call Jennier Miranda at (510) 885-2356 for more information.

Rape Panel

The Rape Panel is a collaborative campus-wide effort consisting of a Physician from Student Health Services, a Police Officer from Department of Public Safety, and a Counselor from Counseling and Psychological Services. This resourceful panel provides information on rape prevention, personal safety, and the process of handling a rape case (medical, legal, and counseling components of the aftermath). The Rape Panel has been invited to speak to various classes and student organizations.

Health Links

Here you will find health links to local, state, and national health agencies, as well as non-profit organizations.

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

Need to complete your Health Sciences 4500 Field Practicum Internships, your Community Health Nursing Preceptorship, or your Sociology Option? Would you like a placement on campus for your convenience? Student Health Services is always looking for volunteers or interns. Please note that you do not have to be a Health Science or any science-related major. Please contact Jennifer Miranda at (510) 885-2356 for more information.
