Crime Prevention

McGruff CartoonWe believe that most crimes committed on campus are preventable. As a part of the University's educational mission, the University Police Department attempts to teach members of the University community how to reduce their chances of being "victimized." For this reason, the department has a formally trained Crime Prevention Officer. We also offer online crime prevention tips.

The University's Crime Prevention Program is based upon the dual concepts of eliminating or minimizing criminal opportunities, whenever possible, and encouraging students and employees to be responsible for their own security and the security of others. Crime prevention classes are provided at no charge and are flexibly scheduled to meet the needs of the community. The service is highlighted by the following on going programs available to our staff, faculty, and students

Alcohol and Drug Awareness

A presentation exploring the effects of alcohol and drugs on the human mind and body, the symptoms of alcohol and drug dependency, and the laws relating to alcohol and drug use.

RAD EmblemAcquaintance Rape and Awareness

A program exploring the facts and myths surrounding the area of rape sexual assault, offering prevention strategies to help avoid becoming a victim of this violent crime, and informing students of rape and sexual assault and victim support services.

Self Protection of Women

The University Police Department offers a "self defense for women" program called "Rape Aggressions Defense System", or "RAD". This is a comprehensive program which includes instruction in risk reduction techniques as well as physical defense techniques. Approximately 12 hours of instruction are provided by two University Police Department employees who are certified "RAD" instructors. Currently the program is being offered as a credited course through the CSUEB Kinesiology & Physical Education Department.

Operation Identification

The engraving of serial numbers or owner-recognized number on items of value is strongly promoted and made available free-of-charge campus wide.

Personal Safety Workshop

A basic class designed to cover many common sense steps and procedures that can be followed to help reduce the risk of becoming the victim of a crime committed against your person or property. This course can be tailored to focus on specific needs and concerns of individuals, groups, and/or organizations.
